I’ve never liked winter. Not once. And this year it didn’t even try to arrive gracefully. It just barged in, cold and unapologetic, like that relative who shows up uninvited to a family party and immediately takes the best seat at the table. Autumn, poor thing, seems to have gotten scared and disappeared before it even began.
The temperatures have been below zero these past few days, and every time I step outside I feel like my fingers are about to fall off.
But… there is one thing that makes winter bearable. Winter food. The warm, comforting, rich kind that hugs you from the inside and of course, the queen of all queens: SARMA. 👑
Sarma is my personal soul-heater. My winter savior. My weakness. My negotiation point. If there’s anything that can win me over, it’s her… tender, juicy, perfectly tangy, smelling like home and quiet comfort.
And here we are again, at that time of year when my favorite ritual is simmering in the pot. Let it be minus a thousand outside… as long as there’s Sarma, everything feels a little easier.

What exactly is Sarma?

@lanamihajlovic that does sound like comfort food. Thanks for explaining what it is. I am going to have to try this out, maybe in winter as its summer here in Australia and very hot. Too hot for slow foods.

@judyrusselllive-com-au Btw. I’m sure you can find it in Australia too (especially in bigger cities). In the 1990s, many people from ex-Yugoslavia went to Australia. As far as I know, there are also Balkan restaurants.

@lanamihajlovic next time I go to Brisbane I will try some, I see we have at least 5 Balkan restaurants and cafe’s in the city and surrounding suburbs.
