Last weekend, we had the honor of hosting a family from southern Serbia, which turned into a wonderful cultural and culinary experience! The southern regions of our country are rich in unique culinary traditions, and I was especially happy to learn from aunt how to make authentic Baranica – an old-fashioned pie, something between a flatbread and cornbread, with homemade cheese as an essential ingredient.
Serbian cuisine is a true treasure trove of flavors and cultures, with influences that vary from north to south – while the north features Hungarian and German specialties, the south embraces Turkish and traditional Serbian recipes, just like this one. With my favorite homemade cheese that aunt brought, we made Baranica, a true little masterpiece of tradition and taste.
I share with you my very first Baranica. I’m proud of this blend of old customs and homemade cooking!

How wonderful, Lana! Thank you for sharing this special experience with us and giving us a glimpse of Serbian cuisine. You can feel the love you put into preparing that Baranica, and what a privilege to make it with the homemade cheese your aunt brought , that’s what truly gives a dish its soul!
And tell us, Lana what is Baranica traditionally served with in Serbia? Is it enjoyed on its own or paired with pickles, soup, or a typical local drink? We’d love to learn more about those culinary customs, which I’m sure are full of beautiful stories.Thank you for bringing culture and tradition to our virtual table!❤️

And we are proud of you too! 🧡 Your Baranica tells a story, and honoring it through skill and care is a beautiful way to cook with soul. Did you know that in many traditional cuisines, cheese is matured in cloth or clay pots? How does your family prepare theirs to get that special depth of flavor?

@soldamiani Thank you so much! Baranica truly carries generations of love and tradition. In our family, the cheese is often wrapped in a clean cloth and left to mature in cool, humid cellars. It’s incredible how that simple method brings out such rich, complex flavors. I am definitely a cheese lover. 🧀
