      Cocktail, that great unknown.

That great unknown for me. Although I have already taken some cocktail courses here at Scoolinary, I want to continue learning about this wonderful world. By the way, do you know where the cocktail was born? The origin of the cocktail is uncertain and debated, but it is mainly placed in the early 19th century in the United States, with the term “cocktail” first recorded in “>New York in 1806. Although New York is key, other theories point to New Orleans (with Antonio Peychaud) or to mixtures in Campeche, Mexico.

Here are the most accepted theories of origin:

United States (New York/New Orleans): it is considered the formal birthplace of the modern cocktail. In 1806, The Balance and Columbian Repository newspaper in Hudson, New York, defined “cocktail” as a stimulating drink based on alcohol, bitters, sugar and water. Another theory places the origin in New Orleans with Antonio Peychaud, who created mixtures in egg cups (coquetier).

Campeche, Mexico: A popular theory suggests that English sailors in the port of San Francisco de Campeche observed locals mixing colorful root drinks, resembling the “cola de gallo” (cocktail).

Origin of the Term (Cola de Gallo): The term “cocktail” became popular in the 19th century, referring to the vibrant colors of the mixtures.

French/English influence: Some theories mention the French drink “coquetier” (from which the word could derive) or 17th century cocktails in England (such as Cock Ale).

Despite its diffuse origins, the cocktail culture was consolidated and expanded from the United States, officially consolidating the term in the early 1800s.
