The squid sandwich or bocadillo de calamares is a very common culinary specialty in Spain consisting of squid coated in flour and fried in olive oil, or the more sophisticated version which is all of the above plus a spicy tomato sauce and garlic mayonnaise similar to patatas bravas. It is usually served hot, freshly made. This type of sandwich is original and very popular in Madrid and can be found in most bars in the Spanish capital, being very typical of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid and one of the characteristic smells of the square. In Zaragoza is traditional the sophisticated version of the squid sandwich, with spicy sauce (tomato, mayonnaise and garlic), and is called bocadillo de calamares bravos, which is served in all the bars on Cinco de Marzo street.
