Today I want to present you a dish with tradition, “Gachas Migas”, a hearty dish, which is made with almond flour. “This flour was forbidden for human consumption for more than 50 years in Spain. Obtained from the seeds of the almorta (Lathyrus sativus), it was used during the Civil War and the post-war period as a staple food for many families in Castilla-La Mancha and other inland regions, due to its low cost. However, the consumption of almorta flour was linked to a neurotoxic disease called latirism, which affects the legs and bones, which led Franco’s authorities to ban its use in 1967, based on studies conducted in the 1940s. The law preventing its consumption was finally repealed in 2018, after it was shown that, consumed from time to time, almorta was not so dangerous.” This porridge was prepared for me by my grandmother, who learned it from her mother and at the same time from her grandmother. This recipe has been in the family for decades and has passed from generation to generation.
