I have been a little sad for a few days because the supermarket where I have been shopping since I was a teenager, almost all my life I would say. I had it 50 meters from home, the owners were friends, well they are still friends, only now I don’t see them every day as before.

It is a pity that the neighborhood stores are closing forever, because they have not even been transferred, nobody wants a small business when the big stores are so close.

Life changes, now that I am getting older it turns out that I will have to drive to a center that has opened up quite big on the other side of town.

We have lost that familiarity with which we were served, that chat while we weighed the fruit or made the account and above all, that sincere affection and confidence to be buying the best products. Gourmet products that I could not find in any other store, and what they did not have, they brought just for me.

Many times, when I asked the owner if he had such a product because I needed it to make a recipe for a challenge, he would tell me: “are you going to make any of your inventions? “or “but does that exist?” if he saw that it was hard to get.

I guess I will get used to it with time, but it is inevitable to feel that I have lost quality of life😕.

And you, are you from neighborhood stores or department stores?

      Happy Sunday

Maloles, I understand you very much and I am very sorry that you are going through this emptiness. It is normal that it hurts, because it is not just a store, it is a little piece of our history, of those corners that keep memories, loved ones and simple moments that filled the soul.

It has also happened to me to have to say goodbye to my “landlords” as we say here. Either because I have moved or because, sadly, they have had to close. I remember when I was a little girl my grandfather used to take me to a little neighborhood store where the owner, Don Pepe, was like one of the family. He watched me grow up, knew what we liked, kept my favorite sweets for me and always had a nice word or a joke. During the pandemic he had to close, and although it sounds exaggerated, I felt that something was breaking inside me, because it was more than just shopping, it was part of my life.
It’s true that big stores don’t have that warmth or those moments that were in the everyday life of a neighborhood store. But it is also nice to keep everything they gave you, with those talks, those gestures, and to know that you still have a friendship with them even if they are not in the same place.

I send you a big hug, one of those that comfort you, and I hope that little by little you will find new little corners that, without replacing what you had before, will bring you good things. We are here to chat whenever you need it. Happy Sunday to you too ❤️

@sussan_scoolinaryteam Gracias Sussan !
          Feliz domingo 😘

I remember the neighborhood store that was where my parents lived, where I spent my childhood, they also had everything, once I got married I went to another place to live and there were no stores, there was only a supermarket under my house. About 6 years ago we moved to a bigger house in another place and here if there is a small neighborhood store that has almost everything, and the wife every time I go you tell me you always inventing right? you do not stop even if you do not have time you always get a little to do what you like.

I completely understand you. Your message really touched me, because I’m also someone who finds comfort in those small rituals and familiar faces from the neighborhood. The vendor who knows exactly which apple you like, the “good morning” that isn’t just polite but personal. When a place like that disappears, it’s not just a store we lose. It’s a piece of our daily life, our sense of home, even our identity.

It’s not easy to adjust to big supermarkets where you’re just another customer in line. What’s missing is that feeling of being known, someone remembering your habits, your favorite ingredients, your little kitchen experiments. That story you shared about the shop owner who would bring you what you needed and tease you about your “inventions” is just beautiful. It says so much about how genuine that connection was.

So yes, maybe over time you’ll adjust to this new rhythm, but it’s okay to feel the sadness. You’re grieving something real and precious.

Wishing you a gentle Sunday… and who knows, maybe one day, on some unexpected corner, a new little shop will open, and a new familiar face will slowly become part of your story. 💞

@lanamihajlovic That’s right Lana, in the end we lose a little piece of our history with the closing of those neighborhood stores that have accompanied us all our lives… We have to get used to the new times with the best of spirits❤.

Hope your Sunday was a good one. Hugs

It’s a real shame… but yes, neighborhood stores are an endangered species. When I lived in Madrid the supermarket was only for certain things: groceries, milk… and things like that. Fresh food, in the market and small stores. Now I have to travel by car anyway, because the village where I live is so small that it has nothing… but nothing at all, not even a bakery. In a nearby town, Brihuega, there are small stores, where we already have that relationship of chatting and they know what you like and how. That the fishmonger warns me that he has brought squid “as you like it”, or that in the butcher’s shop they bring me chicken legs without me ordering them “to make sweets for your dog”… it is priceless 🥰🥰.

@undefined me apunto.

                        • I recently had a store that sold all the bakery products and if I didn’t have them, they would look for them for me, but the owner moved to Spain. And the people who run it now don’t even try to create a link…sometimes I would send them a message and pass them my list and they would put everything together for me so I wouldn’t waste time….now, from time to time I send them messages telling them that I miss them.
