Even though I promised myself that holidays would be only for rest and enjoyment, today I broke the rule and decided to cook lunch. Since I’m in Greece, it was inevitable that the meal would turn out in the Greek spirit. 🇬🇷
I had the chance to meet a wonderful woman here, a pastry chef and a serious cook. We exchanged recipes, and it turned into the most entertaining kitchen experience. She doesn’t speak English, I don’t speak Greek, and our mutual friend speaks just a little English. Imagine the scene… three women in the kitchen, waving hands like air traffic controllers, mixing Google Translate with sign language, and still managing to burst out laughing every two minutes. Somehow, the chicken got grilled instead of us, so I call that a success. 😂
So, today’s lunch was: half a chicken grilled and topped with the traditional ladolemono sauce, homemade fries pan-fried until golden, and of course the iconic Greek salad.
For those who might not know, ladolemono is as simple as it is delicious: freshly squeezed lemon juice whisked with good olive oil, a touch of mustard, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. That’s all! Yet it gives the grilled chicken the most amazing, bright and aromatic flavor.
Cooking it here, with new friends, reminded me that food has its own universal language, one that doesn’t need translation, only a good appetite and a smile. 😁
