There is a quiet reverence in the making of a matcha latte — a ceremony not just of flavour, but of intention. It begins not with haste, but with hush: a moment carved out from the noise of the day, where the act of making becomes a meditation in itself.

You start with the matcha — that vivid, velvety green powder, so finely milled it clings to the bamboo scoop like spring mist. It smells of moss and rain and something softly vegetal, a scent that instantly centres you. The bowl awaits, warm and round in your palms, and into it the matcha falls — not dumped, but placed, as if offering it matters.

Then, the water. Never boiling — just shy of it, like a secret kept close. A splash, no more than a whisper, and the whisking begins — not aggressively, but with a rhythmic purpose. The chasen dances in your hand, a blur of fine bamboo prongs, coaxing the powder into a frothy, jade-green foam. It’s hypnotic, watching it bloom into life, like morning light creeping across a tatami mat.

Now comes the milk — warm, silken, just the right side of creamy. You pour it in slowly, reverently, and the two swirl together like ink in water, green folding into white in a soft, pillowy spiral. You might sweeten it, just a touch — honey or maple, perhaps — but only if your spirit calls for it.

And then you sip. Slowly. The taste is at once grassy and gentle, with a hint of umami and a caress of cream — as though the earth itself has been softened and warmed in your cup. It doesn’t jolt like coffee; it steadies. It invites stillness. It reminds you to be where you are.

This isn’t just a drink. It’s a ritual. A love letter to the self, penned in steam and silence. And in those few minutes — whisk, pour, sip — the world feels, if not simpler, at least softer.

Judy, what a beautiful way to describe the preparation of a matcha latte, it almost feels like being right there with you, experiencing that moment of calm. I’m curious, do you always prepare your matcha as a ritual, or do you sometimes make it in a more practical way in your daily routine?

          • @sussan_scoolinaryteam this was the first time I’ve made it at home, as a calming, grounding ritual is goung to become a regular thing. Ive only ever had matcha lattes from a cafe and they are far too strong. I followed the instructions on the back of the set I purchased and it turned out perfect. Subtly devine.

Veo que el matcha latte está de moda por la comunidad últimamente. Voy a tener que sumarme. Bonito ritual, verdad?
