Today I cooked sweet cabbage in tomato sauce, with a bit of potato, carrot, and beef. It may seem like an ordinary dish… simple, quiet, but to me, it’s everything.

It was the first meal I ever learned to cook. I was thirteen, full of excitement and little knowledge, but in that kitchen, under the gentle gaze of the past, I felt as if someone had handed me the secret of life, wrapped in steam, salt, and the silence of a wooden spoon.

I don’t remember the exact measurements or cooking time. I remember the smell. And the feeling of safety as I stirred the cabbage softening just right, the tomato painting everything red like a heart that doesn’t know how to lie.

And today, as I stirred that same cabbage again, it felt like I was stirring through years, memories, and fleeting moments. As if I invited time to sit with me at the table. Every spoonful carried a piece of the past, every bite was a warm hand on my shoulder… gentle, familiar.

Today I cooked a story. My own. With a kind of love that never sits visibly on the plate, but is always recognized in the taste.

Lana, you didn’t just cook a recipe ,you brought a meaningful memory to life, and that’s truly valuable. Thank you for always giving us a glimpse into your kitchen and your story.

Have you changed anything from the original recipe over time, or do you still make it just the way you first learned it?

Thanks for sharing this memory with the community.

@Sussan Estela Olaya In general, the recipe has not changed much. When my sister and I were younger, we liked to have our mom put hot dogs instead of standard meat 😁 Today, sometimes I put beef, sometimes sausage. And there is a slight change in the spices…a little ground pepper and turmeric. ☺️

@lanamihajlovic Lana, it’s so lovely to hear that the recipe has kept its essence over time, while also evolving with your family’s tastes and memories. Those little changes, like the sausages or spices, give each version its own unique story. Thank you for continuing to share your cooking with such warmth and love.❤️

@Mercedes Minaya Palacios Thank you dear. This is the first dish I have successfully cooked in life. I was always in the kitchen when my mom and grandma were cooking. I was always happy to help them.

Even today, this dish is a favorite of mine, as well as of my family and friends. Every time I cook this dish, I cook it for a small army 😁

Wow… thank you for this beautiful moment. 🌿
Your dish may seem humble, but your words turned it into pure poetry. What’s the one smell from the kitchen that instantly brings you back “home”?

I have some memories like this, too when first starting to know “you’ll handle it”, right? ☺Full of joy and a sense of self-reliance.

@Sol Damiani Hmmmm…One of the smells that brings me back home and to my childhood, is the smell of baked apple strudel. My grandmother often made it, rolling out the dough herself. I regret that I didn’t learn to make that dough from her. But I remember whenever I came she always prepared strudel for me, it was never difficult for her. That smell from the door…even today that smell brings me home. In grandma’s arms.
