Sweet Cherry Vareniki
#FoldingChallenge
Profile: Amateur
When my dear Bea @beatriztorijagmail-com challenged me to make a sweet dish for this Folding Challenge, I knew it had to be something that carried both tradition and a bit of nostalgia.
Years ago, while living in Croatia, I often shared meals with a Polish friend who used to make Pierogi and that’s how my love for filled dough began. More recently, through my Russian friends, I discovered Vareniki, the close relative of Pierogi, tender and soulful in their own way.
For this challenge, I decided to make a sweet version of Vareniki filled with homemade cherry jam. I used a classic vareniki dough, soft and elastic, thin enough to let the filling shine. The flavor is deep and familiar… sweet, yet with a touch of longing, just like old memories that stay warm in the heart.
For the closure, I chose the traditional half-moon fold, pressing the edges gently to keep the jam safely inside, a small ritual that feels almost meditative. They were boiled until they floated, then served warm with vanilla cream and an extra spoon of cherry jam, a contrast between softness and brightness, memory and play.
The result was simple, yet full of emotion. A dessert that bridges my memories from Croatia and my new friendships in Serbia. This dish reminded me how food connects people, stories, and places, no matter how far apart they seem.
What began as a sweet challenge became a story about shared tables, familiar flavors, and the joy of folding a little piece of the world into one bite.

On a recent weekend I visited https://bestfootballprediction.com/accumulator-tips/ Accumulator Tips and ended up discovering matches I wouldn’t normally track. The multi-match combinations highlighted lesser leagues and quiet fixtures, which added freshness. I appreciated the explanatory notes: one leg discussed defensive lapses, another noted a key player returning. The combined structure gave me a framework to watch the games rather than just flip channels. Even though some matches didn’t end as expected, I walked away with deeper insight into how fixtures can be connected and how small details matter when multiple games are grouped together.

Such a great player you are, Lana — and so fast! 😄 How many hours did it take you to go from Bea’s suggestion to this dreamy plate? We’re impressed!
Your Sweet Cherry Vareniki look tender, vibrant and full of soul. The half-moon fold is beautifully shaped and your color choice creates a joyful visual rhythm. The glossy texture and contrasting creams give your photos a warm, nostalgic glow — it almost feels like flipping through a food memory album 📸
What’s the most unexpected filling you’ve ever tried (or dreamed of trying) in a dumpling? We’d love to hear how far you’re willing to stretch this beautiful format.
Thanks for giving this Folding Challenge such heart. You turned it into a stor!1-

@soldamiani Aww, thank you so much! 😊 I think it took me around two days from Bea’s spark of inspiration to the final plate (and a lot of flour on the counter 😅). I really enjoyed shaping them.
As for unexpected fillings…hmmm… I once dreamed of making dumplings with dark chocolate and chili, like a sweet-spicy surprise in every bite. Maybe that’s my next experiment.
And speaking of new challenges, Antonio dared me to make a sweet empanada version ☺️ so stay tuned for part three of this delicious adventure!-

@lanamihajlovic Haha Lana, this week felt like it lasted 1000 days 😂 so seeing your vareniki really sweetened it up!
Sweet empanadas? Yes please! Here in Argentina we have ones filled with membrillo (quince paste), brushed with egg yolk and sprinkled with sugar before baking… golden, glossy and pure nostalgia. You’re gonna love it!
