First day of vacation in Greece and… of course, what else could mark the start better than Souvlaki? 🇬🇷

And before anyone asks – nope, I didn’t make it. This is my official “out of office” meal (finally someone else is feeding me 😅). Now it’s my turn to sit back, let others cook, and simply enjoy beautiful food.

A few tasty facts while I chew:

Souvlaki literally means “little skewer” – simple name, legendary flavor.

Even Homer’s Iliad mentions grilled meat on sticks. Imagine Achilles taking a break from war for a souvlaki snack. 😁

Ancient Greeks sold them at thermopolia, basically the first fast-food stands. McSouvlaki, if you will.

Fun twist: during the Greek dictatorship (1967–1974), pork was the only meat legally allowed in souvlaki and gyros. Which means my chicken souvlaki today is practically an act of freedom. 🕊️

Because in the end, every trip comes with its own gastronomic story and this one will surely serve as inspiration for my future Scoolinary challenges.

Extra twist: while I was trying to enjoy my souvlaki, a squadron of wasps decided I was their lunch date. 🐝 First came a cup of burning coffee to smoke them away (spoiler: didn’t work). Then the restaurant owner showed up with a napkin full of meat pieces and set it on another table, basically giving the wasps their own souvlaki menu so I could eat in peace.

That’s exactly the kind of Greek hospitality I love. ❤️

Have you ever tried souvlaki and do you prefer it with chicken, pork, or lamb? What’s the funniest or most unexpected thing that ever happened to you while eating out on vacation?

Sending you sunny bites, buzzing adventures, and warm vibes… straight from the island of Thassos. 🌞🏝️

@sussan_scoolinaryteam Thank you so much, Sussan 🤗 Greece is always such an inspiration for me. And not only for the food itself but also for the little treasures I bring back home. I love buying their spice mixes, olive oil, and those amazing black dried olives… they always end up sneaking into my dishes later on. I’m already imagining how I’ll use them in new creations once I’m back!

@sussan_scoolinaryteam I’m already dreaming about using the spice blends for a roasted chicken with a Mediterranean twist, and those black dried olives will definitely end up in a fresh bread dough or a salad. As for the olive oil… well, that’s liquid gold, and it somehow finds its way into everything. ☺️

Lanaaa, I’m loving this entire post—between your out-of-office souvlaki moment and that wasp diplomacy, I was hooked from start to finish 😄
And yes, I did try souvlaki as soon as I landed in Rhodes earlier this year! It was the very first gift I received from a branch of the family I hadn’t even met yet… and it filled both my stomach and my heart 💙 That pork had the most glorious texture—crispy on the outside, juicy and golden on the inside. Pure magic.
Your post perfectly captures how food tells a story, not just of flavor, but of place, people and connection.
Also, your photos OMG. That grilled char + sunlight combo is a whole mood.
Enjoy every bite and keep sending us those sunshine-flavored updates! 🌞🇬🇷

@soldamiani Sooool, you made me laugh out loud with “wasp diplomacy” 🤣🐝 That’s exactly what it felt like! And wow, what a beautiful welcome you had in Rhodes. Nothing says “you’re family” like a perfectly grilled souvlaki handed to you on day one. 💙

I love how you say food tells the story of place, people, and connection. That’s exactly why these little culinary moments stay with us forever.

Sending you a big hug from Thassos and a promise of more sunshine-flavored updates soon! 🥰

Me gustan toooodas 🤤🤤🤤

@beatriztorijagmail-com Hahaha 😂😂 you see, even Achilles knew when it was time for a snack break! Now you got me curious about Gila, you’ll definitely have to tell me that story soon.

And the Turkish version is super similar, delicious in its own way. But let me tell you, I once tried brochettes in Rwanda made with goat meat… let’s just say it was an extreme sport for the teeth 😅🐐. Tasty, yes, but definitely not for the faint-hearted jaw!

Tremenda historia Lana!

😅 Luckily the wasps didn’t win that round. I got to enjoy every bite of my souvlaki in peace (well… almost). These vacation is the perfect mix of rest and inspiration.
